William Thomas Smith died January 5, 2015 was born on September 4, 1931 in Campobello, South Carolina, son of the late Milton and Florine Smith. He is also predeceased by his wife Gladys, and brothers Guynell, Elbert and Harold. Over the course of his long and varied life "Smoker" was a professional race car driver and founder of Smoker Promotions and at one time owned Spartanburg Raceway. He was also a promoter, carpenter, painter, builder, and operated a jewelry business with his wife Gladys called "Just For the Time of It". He was an avid Senators and Redskins fan and was inducted into the N.H.R.A. Hall of Fame. William Thomas Smith is survived by his children Michael Thomas Smith, Marian Janet Denton, James Robert Smith, Timothy William Smith, and Harold Guynell Smith. He is also survived by 18 grandchildren and 13 great grandchildren. William Thomas Smith was a man of deep faith in Christ. He was active in the life of the Church, serving for several years as a Deacon in Anacostia Baptist Church and in the Friendly Baptist Church. Because of his faith in Jesus he was also committed to his family and made that a priority in his life. A memorial service will be held on Saturday January 24, 2015 at 1:30 PM in the Chapel of Raymer-Kepner Funeral Home. The family will receive friends at the funeral home following the service. "Smitty" will be interred at 3:30 PM beside his beloved wife Gladys at the First Baptist Church Cemetery, 119 Old Statesville Rd., Huntersville, NC. In lieu of flowers, donation may be made in memory of William T. Smith "Smitty" to Cornelius Animal Shelter, Town of Cornelius, 21445 Catawba Avenue, Cornelius, NC 28031 or Habitat for Humanity, 20310 N. Main Street, Cornelius, NC 28031.
