William C. Lackey

Mr. William C. Lackey, Jr., 65, of Cornelius NC passed away suddenly on December 7, 2010. Born May 17, 1945 in Mecklenburg County he was a son of the late William C. Lackey Sr. and Thelma Devinny Watts. Bill grew up in the Belmont area, graduating from Belmont High School in 1963. He proudly served his country in the Air Force as an electronics technician and was honorably discharges in 1971 and returned to Charlotte. Bill began his illustrious real estate career in 1983. He served as President of the Charlotte Regional Realtors Association (CRRA) and was designated as Committee Chairman of the Year and also was given the Presidents Award. In addition, Bill, chaired the Real Estate and Building Coalition, served as Director of the NC Association of Realtors and the National Association of Realtors. In 2000 he was appointed Realtor of the Year. He provided leadership to a variety of Real Estate Committees and Boards. Bill was an active member of Mt. Zion United Methodist Church where he was a member of the Don Bridger Class, led the Disciple Class for numerous years, taught Sunday School, served on various boards and committees and chaired the Finance Committee. He was active in the community and served as a member of the Town of Cornelius Planning Board. The pride of his life was his beautiful grandchildren, nieces and grand nieces and nephews. He taught all of his grandchildren to fish and loved nothing more than sharing his love of the blues while cruising down Lake Norman. He was known to never pass up a water toy that would delight his grandchildren. A beloved husband, father, brother, grandfather and friend, he leaves to cherish his memory his loving and devoted wife, Barbara Broadway Lackey; daughter, Kaye Lackey; step-sons, Gregory (Hilary) Broadway and Kevin (Cindy) Broadway; grandchildren, Emily Lackey Greene, Alston Broadway, William Lackey and Sidney Broadway; brother, Mark (Andrea) Lackey; sisters, Berry (Tom) Deason and June (Willard) Barker and mother-in-law, Tommie Wilmoth. Memorial services will be conducted 11:00 am Friday December 10, 2010 at Mt. Zion United Methodist Church with Rev. Mike Bailey, Rev. Tim Reimer and Rev. Jill Smith officiating. In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to Mt. Zion United Methodist Church Childrens Music or Mt. Zion United Methodist Church Room in the Inn 19600 Zion Street Cornelius, NC 28031 or Hope House, 15604 Northcross Drive, Huntersville, NC 28078.
