William I. "Bill" Carle, 98, a resident of Aldersgate Retirement Community, Charlotte, NC, passed away May 29, 2015. Born on his grandparents farm, near Alledonia, in rural Belmont County, Ohio, son of Ralph Gordon and Vera May Carle, Bill spent his early years in Bellaire and Barnesville, OH. His summers, spent on the farm with his devoted grandparents, were the source of many pleasant memories shared in stories recounted through the years. He graduated from Barnesville High School in 1935 and from Ohio University in 1939 with a degree in English. Bill's career was with the U.S. Post Office Department where he first served as an accountant in the Athens, OH post office and then in the Pacific Fleet Post Office during his active military service in World War II. Following the war, he was a Postal Inspector in West Virginia, and then in the Delaware, Maryland, and Pennsylvania areas. Following his retirement in 1971, he worked in the Bank of Delaware's Trust Department for ten years. He was a faithful member of the United Methodist Church his entire life. For more than forty years, Bill was a member of Grace United Methodist Church in Wilmington, Delaware, where he helped in the food pantry, served as church treasurer and contributed in many other areas. Bill's interests were varied. He was an accomplished rosarian and tested new varieties at the invitation of several nurseries. His beautiful roses adorned the family dining table and were often shared with friends. He had keen interests in baseball, golf, music, travel, and photography. No crossword puzzle proved too difficult for his knowledge of the English language and the classics. His cursive handwriting was incomparable. Bill was wholly devoted to his wife and family. He ascribed to the Biblical principle of moderation which he followed in thought, word and deed. His good nature, gentle humor, and acts of kindness drew many into his large circle of friends and acquaintances. Bill was forever faithful in connecting with family and friends at Christmas and birthdays. He is survived by his wife of more than 76 years, Anna Grace; his sons, William E. (Cathy), Thomas W. (Mary), Michael G. (Ramah), and his daughter, Susan; and his five grandchildren and six great-grandchildren to whom he was their beloved Pop-Pop. He was predeceased by his sister, Helen A. Carle.
