On Wednesday February 14, 2018, God called one of his children home.
Vivian Ann Simmons Britton, daughter of the late Zachery and Alpha Simmons, was born August 5, 1947 in Washington, DC. Vivian, affectionately known as Vicky, received her formal education from Lincoln High School in Bessemer City, North Carolina, and later she attended North Carolina Central in Durham where she studied music. Vivian furthered her education by attending Howard University in Washington, DC where she earned both Bachelor and Master degrees in Science. Vicky was employed with the State Department, and later worked at NASA, Goddard Flight Center until her retirement. She was a member of the Delta Sigma Theta sorority and loved to play the piano at many events. At an early age, she confessed Christ and joined Clover A.M.E. Zion in Clover, SC. In 1969, she joined Metropolitan A.M.E. Zion Church in Washington, DC. In 1987, Vivian married Charles Britton, and both joined and actively served at Kent Baptist Church in Landover, MD. In 2005, she moved to Charlotte, NC where she became an active member of Mt. Zion Baptist Church, until her death.
Vivian was preceded in death by her beloved Charles Britton in 2001. She was also preceded in death by her grandparents, uncles and aunts.
She leaves to cherish her memory her beloved son, Dempsey Barnes, (Keshia Barnes) of Washington, DC, one stepdaughter, Pamela Culbreath (Walter Culbreath), of Washington, DC, five grandchildren, Diamonee, Dylan, Demetruis, Devin and Jonathan, two sisters, Betty Faye Williams of Toledo, OH, Katherine Davis (Dobie Davis) of Charlotte, NC, one brother Ronald Simmons of Gastonia, NC, one sister in law Thelma Carter of Washington, DC, one brother in law, Leon Britton of Washington, DC, a dear friend and coworker, Helen Harrington, and a host of nieces, nephews, great nieces, great nephews, cousins and friends.
Funeral services will be held at 12:00 noon on Wednesday, February 21, 2018 at the Mt. Zion Baptist Church, 821 Hawley St., Charlotte, NC. A visitation will be one hour prior to the service at the church. Interment will be at Cedar Hill Cemetery, MD.
The family wishes to acknowledge with deep appreciation the many comforting messages and prayers, and other expressions of kindness and concern. Special thanks to Reverend Daniel E. Joesph and the Mt. Zion Baptist Church family, Apriums Health 10A Carolinas Medical Center, and Levin & Dickerson Hospice and Pallative Care.
