Varva C. Collins

Varva Campbell Collins, 84, of Huntersville, NC passed away peacefully at her home on Wednesday, April 12, 2017.
Born in Maiden, NC, Varva was the daughter of the late C.A. Campbell and Mary Cook, and the wife of the late Richard Collins. After graduating from Balls Creek High School, she moved to Washington, DC to take a position in the US Department of the Interior. When she returned to NC, she worked in Charlotte before moving to Huntersville. She founded The Huntersville Star newspaper and served as its Editor and Publisher. She enjoyed traveling, painting, and writing, as well as gardening and birdwatching. She attended St. Mark's Catholic Church in Huntersville and St. Columbkille Catholic Church in Fort Myers, FL.
Varva Collins is survived by a son John Collins of Huntersville, NC, a daughter Amanda vonDeak of Rocky River, OH; sister Deane Griffin of Lincolnton, NC; stepbrother Walter "Mike" Campbell of Beaufort, NC; three grandchildren, Hilary "Jill" Nosse, Katharine Welch and Christopher Welch; and one great-grandchild, Sylvia Nosse. She was preceded in death by her son, Edward, and brother, Maurice "Will" Campbell.
A private memorial service will be held at a later date. Her family and her many friends in North Carolina and Florida will surely remember her in their prayers and thoughts. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to The Edward Collins Scholarship at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte or The American Cancer Society.
