Dr Terence (Terry) Charles Feir, 94 years old, passed away to be with his beloved wife Joyce on Sunday, October 6, 2024. While Terry spent the last years of his life in the vicinity of Charlotte, NC, it would be inaccurate to say he was from there; he was, quite literally, a man of the world who served his adopted country in various posts around the world. Terry was born in the small town of Stettler in the province of Alberta, Canada on November 21, 1929. The son of Elmer Feir, a Judge and combat veteran of World War I, and mother, Ann. Terry attended medical school at the University of Alberta in Edmonton, finishing his residency in Kansas to become a Doctor of Psychiatry. It was in Kansas that Terry met Joyce, his love and lifelong partner, on a blind date.
Terry was passionate about service and used his professional skills to work in both community and Veteran hospitals as well as underserved prison populations. He later joined the U.S. State Department as a diplomat with the title of Regional Psychiatric Officer. This position allowed him to provide care for Americans living and working abroad in far-flung places in Africa, Europe, Asia, and the Middle East. After retiring from the State Department Terry continued to serve as a locum tenens physician for various clinics and prisons around the country.
Terry was a voracious reader and avid traveler. His knowledge of military history, specifically WWI and WWII, was extensive. His library was large and varied, his passport required fold outs to accommodate all his stamps, and his raucous dinner conversations were the stuff of legend.
Terry is preceded in death by his wife, Joyce, and his older brother James Feir. Terry and Joyce were married for 64 wonderful years and raised four children: Karen Le Corre, Sandra (Patrick) Myers, Cameron (Katherine) Feir, and Robyn (Michael) Mahoney; nine grandchildren, Megan Le Corre, Christophe Le Corre, Kaitlin Myers, Michael Myers, Eleanor Feir, Jocelyn Feir, Kieran Mahoney, Aidan Mahoney, and Rowan Mahoney.
We will always carry the memory of our father in our hearts. He showed us the world in the most literal way possible; by taking us there. Thanks Dad.
A memorial will be held for friends and family at a date still to be determined. In lieu of flowers, the family requests a donation be made to the Alzheimer’s Association at Alzheimer's Association | Alzheimer's Disease & Dementia Help.
