Sophia Angele Schatz

October 19, 2000 — January 26, 2020

Ms. Sophia Angele Schatz died peacefully on January 26, 2020 at the age of 19, after battling a rare cancer, with bravery and dignity.

Sophia was born on October 19, 2000, in Boston, MA. She graduated from Community School of Davidson in 2019 and was attending college at Emerson College, Boston. She loved her teachers and classmates dearly. Sophia was a best friend to many, her brother; mom and dad; aunt Patty; sweet boyfriend Will; and other close friends. She had special relationships with each.

Sophia grew up spending her summers in Boston where she sailed, played tennis, and explored the city non-stop on roller skates and scooters. Her summers in Boston, camping in Black Mountain in the fall every year, and traveling to foreign countries were the happiest times of her childhood. She was an incredibly nurturing sister to her brother who she often referred to as her favorite person in the world.

During her teen years, she was a lover of photography, fine foods, rooting for Tom Brady, and going to many concerts, including her favorites, Twenty One Pilots and Panic at the Disco, something very special she and her father did together. She was an avid reader as well as a talented writer. She had a zest for life and she loved spending time with her friends, as well as her family. Some of her happiest moments of her high school years were spent wandering the halls of Community School of Davidson. Her mom was very lucky to have spent many hours at the school Sophia’s sophomore and junior year so she got to see her many times throughout the day in a very happy environment that Sophia loved. Sophia dedicated much of her time to charities as she was a caring, and sweet person. She was a lover of animals and an advocate for the homeless.

Toward this last year of her life, although she was struggling with serious health issues, in the true spirit of who she was, she still managed to make it to many concerts, she fell in love, traveled, and spent a lot of quality time with friends and family. She will be missed dearly but never forgotten.

Sophia is survived by her brother, Gavin; parents, Don & Toni Schatz; her sweet Poppie & Nana, Dave & Marilyn Budreau; her loving Grandma & Grandpa, Don & Pat Schatz; her beloved Aunt, Patty St. Amand; and cousin Abby St. Amand.

A funeral mass will be held at 11:00 am, Saturday, February 1, 2020 at St. Mark Catholic Church, 14740 Stumptown Rd, Huntersville, NC 28078. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests a donation to Smile Train, a favorite charity of Sophia’s. Please click below.
