Sonya Carter Finegan, 45, died surrounded by her loving family at Wake Forest University Baptist Hospital on August, 13, 2013, following a lengthy and courageous battle with cancer. Sonya was born on August 29, 1967 to Hilda Hoke Carter and Roy Andrew Carter, Jr. in Hickory, NC. Sonya spent her entire career nurturing children in early childhood education, the last 10 years of which, were at Chesterbrook Academy in Huntersville, NC. The positive impact she had on her "second family" at Chesterbrook cannot be measured and will be her enduring legacy. However her greatest accomplishments were her children, who she raised to be wonderful, caring people. Sonya is survived by her devoted husband, Michael Paul Finegan and her three children, daughters, Sarah Kaitlyn (Kate), and Eleanor Anne (Ellie), and son, Matthew Paul (Matt) of Huntersville. She is also survived by her parents, Roy and Hilda Carter of Hickory, her brother Douglas Carter, his wife Amy, and their two sons, Bryce and Ethan, also of Hickory. The family would like to express their sincere appreciation to the doctors and staff at Wake Forest University Baptist Hospital, especially the nursing staff who attended to Sonya during her numerous stays. Memorials in Sonya's memory may be made to the American Cancer Society. The family will receive friends at Raymer-Kepner Funeral Home on Saturday, August 17, 2013 from 1:00 p.m. - 3:00 p.m., with a service to celebrate Sonya's life immediately following in the chapel of the funeral home at 3:00 p.m. Raymer-Kepner Funeral Home & Cremation Service Huntersville, NC is assisting the family.
