Shirley Ross Haney Riser, 80, of Marshville, NC passed away peacefully on May 6, 2024 in Huntersville, NC.
Shirley was born in Marshville, NC on June 15,1943 to the late Vernon Ross Haney and Virginia Belle Williams Haney. She graduated in 1961 from Forest Hills High School, then in 1962 from Wingate College. After working in Charlotte as a Legal Secretary, she met and later married Robert B. Riser Jr. on September 5, 1969. As Robert was serving in the Marines, they embarked upon a military journey which located them to Germany where they lived for 3 years, and then, they returned to the US to eventually settle in Marshville, NC. They started a family, and Shirley spent the remainder of her time at home raising and caring for their 2 daughters.
Along with her parents, she is preceded in death by her husband, Robert B. Riser, Jr. and her son-in-law, Joel P. Black. Shirley is survived by her two daughters, Mary Katherine Black of Marshville, NC, and Susan Robin Whitlock and husband, Scott Whitlock, and one grandson, William Ross Whitlock, of Statesville, NC, one brother Morris Haney and sister-in-law Mahalia Haney of Marshville, NC, one nephew who was like her son, Henry Haney Jr. and wife Lori of Marshville, and Henry’s sweet daughters, Abby Polk and husband, AJ, and children (Kase and Millie), and Amber Haney of Marshville. Shirley also has lots of cousins and loved ones from the Haney, Ross, Griffin and Williams lineage.
Her family would like to say a special thank you to her caregivers including Christine Arce and the team at Olde Knox Commons along with Chaplain Jonathan Allen and his hospice team from VIA Health Partners for their love, support and care for Shirley during her final few years of life.
A visitation will be held on Friday, May 10, 2024 from 11am to 12pm followed by a funeral service at 12:00 noon at Raymer-Kepner Funeral Home in Huntersville, NC. A private committal service will be held on Wednesday, May 15, 2024 at Salisbury National Cemetery.
