Shirley Marie Holloway Hughes, 69, of Wilmington, NC went to be with the Lord on April 3, 2016 at the home of her daughter, Renee Hughes, in Huntersville, NC, after moving there with her husband on March 20th for her remaining days. As Shirley’s Savior came for her, she took His hand and her last breath while surrounded by her family.
Shirley was born in San Antonio, Texas in 1946. After marrying in 1965, Shirley moved with her husband to Wilmington, NC two years later. She is survived by her husband of 51 years, George E. “Skip” Hughes, Jr.; her daughters, N. Renee Hughes of Huntersville, NC, Holly Johnson (Rodney) of Huntersville, NC, and Sheri O’Neal (James) of Wilmington, NC.; her two grandchildren, Hannah and Grant Johnson; her two brothers, Oran Holloway and Donald Holloway of San Antonio, TX; her three kitty cats, Abby, Cleo and Prissy; and a number of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends. She is preceded by her parents, Oran L. Holloway and Mary Kortz Holloway, and her brother, Larry Holloway.
An amazing wife and mother, Shirley embodied family devotion, loyalty, and unconditional love, and consistently demonstrated her fun-loving nature no matter the circumstance. She was a courageous fighter who beat many seemingly insurmountable odds and a role model of bravery, optimism and determination. Shirley is now with the Lord, the angels, and her daddy, enjoying the best sweet tea ever, engaging in lively conversation, sharing laughter and arguing over politics.
A memorial service celebrating Shirley’s life will be held on April 17, 2016 at 2:30 pm at the Little Chapel on the Boardwalk, 2 W. Fayetteville St., Wrightsville Beach, NC. The service will be officiated by Pastor Jim Herchenhahn, Senior Pastor at Riley’s Creek Baptist Church in Rocky Point, NC.
In accordance with Shirley's wishes, the family requests donations to Duke Cancer Center in lieu of flowers. Shirley, along with her family, truly appreciated Duke’s unwavering commitment over the last 11 years, which allowed her to enjoy many extra years with her family and friends.
