Shirley Gillespie Couch

Shirley Gillespie Couch, 89, of Davidson, died January 8, 2025 at Atrium Health Cabarrus. A cherished wife, devoted mother, and loving grammy, Shirley will be deeply missed by all who knew her. 

She was born on October 17, 1935 in New Holland, Georgia to Sarah Wilson and Joseph Wesley Gillespie. Shirley was married to Thomas William Couch on August 26, 1956 in Ware Shoals, SC. Together, they shared 58 wonderful years and raised a family built on faith, love, and unwavering support. As a mother, she instilled in her children values of integrity, hard work, and kindness. Her love for her family knew no bounds, and she was always there to offer comfort, advice, and laughter. As a grandmother, she took immense joy in the lives of her grandchildren, often spoiling them with homemade treats, warm hugs, and the unforgettable stories she would tell. 

Shirley was employed as a secretary at Davidson Elementary School in Davidson, NC, where she was loved by students and staff for 18 years. Prior to that, she worked in the audiovisual department at Indiana University.

Shirley had a heart of gold and a spirit that touched everyone she met. Her kindness was unmatched, and her generosity knew no limits. For over 25 years, her home was an extension of the Davidson College Athletic Training Department. Many Davidson athletes were welcomed into the family home to recover from injury or illness. A homemade meal at her house was a coveted invite for student athletes. 

Mrs. Couch was preceded in death by her parents J.W. and Sarah Gillespie, husband Tom Couch, and daughter Kerri Jane Couch. She leaves behind her three beloved sons, Thomas Kevin and wife Joy of Wilmington, NC, Joseph Christopher of Davidson, NC, William Kendall and wife Leslie of Fort Mill, SC; and four grandchildren: William Cade Couch, Gabriella Kendall (Gabby) Couch, Jenna Annalise Couch, and Coltyn Joseph (CJ) Couch, along with many friends who were fortunate to know her. 

Her spirit will live on in the stories we tell, the traditions she passed down, and the love she so freely gave. While we will miss her more than words can express, we take comfort in knowing that she is now at peace, reunited with loved ones who have gone before her.

Funeral services will be held at 2:00 PM on Sunday, January 12, 2025, in the Chapel of Raymer-Kepner Funeral Home, Huntersville. Interment will follow at Mimosa Cemetery, Davidson. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Davidson Athletic Fund, 209 Ridge Road, Davidson, NC 28035.
