Ruth Bundy Hallman, age 87, of Davidson, NC (formerly of Morehead City, North Carolina), died Saturday, May 20, 2017. A private service will be held in Hendersonville, North Carolina, for Ruth and Bob Hallman, previously deceased. Memorial donations will be appreciated for any organizations benefitting children or to the Class of 1951 Scholarship, Office of Alumni Relations, Winthrop University, Rock Hill, SC 29733.
Mrs. Hallman was predeceased by her husband, Robert E. Hallman. They are survived by their children and grandchildren: Robert A. and Erin Hallman and their children and step-children Travis Hallman of Charlotte, North Carolina, Kayla, Jessica and Colin Hallman and Hunter and Reagan Henderlite of Cornelius, NC; David and Stephanie Hallman and their children Alexa and Maura of Montpelier, Virginia, Robin Hallman Wheatley and Dan Wheatley and their children Emma Wheatley of Tempe, Arizona, and Sarah and Adam Wheatley of Lakewood, Colorado, and Lynn Hallman of Newport, North Carolina; and Mrs. Hallman’s sister, Jean Bundy Scott of Blacksburg, Virginia.
Ruth was the daughter of Mattie and Edgar Bundy who was school superintendent and principal in Elizabeth City, Perquimans County, and Wilmington schools of North Carolina. She was the granddaughter of Sheriff Charles Reid of Elizabeth City who was elected to serve that community for twenty-two years.
Serving as class president in her sophomore and senior years at Winthrop College/now Winthrop University, Mrs. Hallman continued her support and work for the Winthrop Class of 1951 and for Winthrop. Mrs. Hallman worked together with her classmates to establish the Class of 1951 Scholarship, awarded to students with evidence of service to school or community. Devoted first to her family, Mrs. Hallman was also a public school teacher in three states, a speaker and nationally published author of nine books for children and young adults with a specialty in her writing for reluctant readers and for English-as-a-Second-Language readers. Ruth also wrote by assignment for WorldBook/Childcraft, for the United Methodist Church, and for school textbook companies.
