Ronald Nolan Sides, 76, of Cornelius, NC, passed away on December 26, 2016, surrounded by his loving family. Mr. Sides was born October 22, 1940, in Concord, NC, to the late Jernie Lee Sides and Nola Helms Sides. He was a 1958 graduate of Concord High School. After serving his country in the U.S. Air Force during the Viet Nam War, Mr. Sides received his degree in electrical engineering from the University of North Carolina at Charlotte. He joined Robert W. Chapman & Co. as sales representative for electrical manufacturers equipment. He was employed with the Chapman Company for 30 years and at retirement was company CEO, president and chairman.
Mr. Sides was a charter member of The Peninsula Country Club, a former president of the Engineering Alumni Association at UNC Charlotte, and an avid sports fan and supporter of UNC Charlotte Athletics. He enjoyed golfing, sailing, and traveling. Throughout his adult life, Mr. Sides was an active member of the Lutheran Church, serving different congregations in many capacities as Sunday school teacher, youth group advisor, chairman of the building committee, and member and chair of the church council. Mr. Sides developed his love and talent for singing as a youth growing up in the United Methodist Church in Concord and later in the adult choir at Community in Christ Lutheran Church.
Along with his parents, Mr. Sides was preceded in death by his sister, Betty Sides McCachern, his brother, Bennie (Max) Sides, and his stepmother, Ophelia McCachren Sides. Mr. Sides leaves, to cherish his memory, his loving wife of 56 years, Kay Fesperman Sides; daughter Leslie Sides Rink and her fiancé, David Howard; sisters, Patricia Sides Propst and Deane Sides Stokes; and sisters-in-law, Katharin Green Sides, Jeanne Fesperman Morrisette, Harriet Fesperman Black, and Beth Fesperman Saintsing as well as many nieces and nephews.
A memorial service will be held at 2:00 pm on Tuesday, January 3, at Community in Christ Lutheran Church, Cornelius, NC. Visitation will be held at the church one hour before the service. The family wishes to thank the staff of Carolinas Medical Center, Neurosurgical ICU, for their wonderful support and care. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to Community in Christ Lutheran Church, and designated for the Ronald N. Sides Memorial Fund.
