He was born in Chicago, IL to Robert Edward Jelinek and Lilian Kovarik Jelinek. He graduated from Austin High School and earned Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in Mechanical Engineering from Northwestern University.
Following graduation and the Army, he had a successful thirty year career with IBM. His expertise in acoustics and product safety contributed to the development of several early computer processors and printers.
Bob enjoyed multiple interests and hobbies. He loved boating and sailing, and was a past commander in the Power Squadron. Throughout his life he loved singing in the IBM Glee club and church choir. Other interests included landscaping, traveling, snow skiing, and exploring the family genealogy.
Bob is fondly remembered by those who knew and loved him for his keen intellect, his love for things mechanical, his commitment to family, and his humble, yet courageous leadership.
He is survived by a large, loving family.
The funeral service will take place Friday, August 26 at 2 PM at Unity Presbyterian Church, 8210 Unity Church Road, Denver, NC. The family will receive friends prior to the service beginning at 1 PM. Friends may offer condolences to the family at www.raymerfh.com.
