Richard Carlton Penwell, 74, of Cornelius, NC, passed away peacefully on November 15, 2016. He was born on April 2, 1942 to the late Edgar Penwell and Ruth Harrop.
Along with his parents, he is preceded in death by his brothers John Penwell and Steve Eller; his sister-in-law Mary Dowell; and his nephew Steven Grossman.
Richard married his high school sweetheart, Patricia Dowell, on July 18, 1964. He graduated in 1970 from the University of Massachusetts Amherst with a PhD in Polymer Science. After 29 years as a dedicated employee at Xerox Corp in Webster, NY, he retired as a Senior Vice President. He was committed to giving back to his community, be it tutoring neighborhood children in math, serving on the School Board of Penfield Central School District in NY or volunteering at S.C.O.R.E. He was known for his humor, his kindness, love of family and for baking the most delicious oatmeal-chocolate chip cookies.
He is lovingly remembered by his beloved wife Patricia Penwell, daughter Melissa and her husband Marty Belanger; and daughter Amy Penwell; grandchildren Noah Penwell, and Ayla and Aiden Belanger; sister Jane and her husband Noel Kimmel; in-laws Linda and Dennis Grossman; and nephews Sean and Douglas Grossman.
The family is honoring Richard’s wishes not to have a funeral service. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society, Alzheimer’s Association, or to the Levine and Dickson Hospice House in Huntersville, NC.
