RC Sifford

July 25, 1923 — December 20, 2011

On Tuesday, December 20 RC Sifford won his short battle with cancer. He passed away only six days after being taken to the hospital. RC was one of the greatest of the Greatest Generation. He was born to Ray and Dola Barker Sifford on July 25, 1923 in Lowesville. His sisters Patsy Sifford, Jessie Gougher, Brettie Black, and Lois Henkle were waiting for him on Tuesday. Certainly RC has a lot of catching up to do with his wife Corina Harris Sifford who died in 1994. RC's sister Elizabeth Rotan and his brother John W. Sifford remain to miss him. RC and Corina had only one child, Tamara Kay who married Michael Caskey. RC was much loved and is sorely missed by his seven grandchildren :Michael Caskey Jr. and his wife Melissa and their children Corina, Michael III, and Abigail; Melanie Hill and her son Elijah "Too Tall" Hill; ; Jonathan Caskey and his wife Katie; Julie Burgess and husband Tony and children Chandler and Caydence; Virginia Caskey; Timothy Caskey and wife Bonnie and their daughter Reagan; Patricia Whitner and husband Allen and their daughter Kenzie. RC also was the proud uncle of several nieces and nephews. RC was well known around the area from his long association with Dellinger Exterminating Company and Russel and Bob Dellinger and their families. It was not uncommon for his "customers" to call him at home to schedule his next visit. Many times his customers became longterm friends. RC graduated from Rock Springs High School and went almost directly to Europe in time to land at Normandy on Dday14 in June of 1944. He fought under Patton and was in the Battle of The Bulge. When Germany surrendered, he was shipped home to prepare for transfer to the Pacific Theatre. Fortunately the war ended and he was able to come home instead. RC's father died only months later and RC assumed responsibility for the family farm. RC was a consummate gardener and was known also for fishing trips with Harold Henkle and Bill Killian and others. RC was a longtime faithful member of Hills Chapel United Methodist Church in Lowesville. Visitation will be conducted 11:00 to 12:00 Friday, December 23 at Hills Chapel United Methodist Church. The funeral service will be conducted at 12:00 followed by a committal in the church cemetery. Lunch will be served at the church afterward. Memorials can be made to Hill's Chapel United Methodist Church cemetery trust fund or building fund, at 988 S. Hwy 16 BR, Stanley, NC 28164. Raymer-Kepner Funeral Home and Cremation Service Huntersville, NC is assisting the family. Friends may offer condolences to the family at www.raymerfh.com
