Paul Francis Fettig

September 10, 1937 — May 6, 2012

Paul (Papa) Francis James Fettig passed away on May 6th after a lengthy illness. He was born on September 10, 1937 in Elwood, Indiana to the late Leo Benedict Fettig and Lenore Marie McKenzie. Paul graduated from Chaminade High School, Dayton, Ohio in 1955, received a Bachelor of Arts degree from St. Joseph College, Rensselaer, Indiana in 1959, and a Master of Social Work degree from The University of Michigan in 1969. He was ordained into the Priesthood on June 5, 1956, with the Missionaries of the Precious Blood. Paul served 21 years of inner city ministry in Detroit and Indiana as Pastor to two parishes and Chaplain for Psychiatric State Hospital. He also served three terms as the Episcopal Vicar of Eastside Vicariate of the Archdiocese of Detroit. After leaving the ministry, he became a licensed counselor and psychotherapist in Michigan, Florida, and North Carolina. Paul is survived by his loving wife of seventeen years, Molly Brennan Payne Fettig, brother Dennis Fettig and wife Donna of Farmington Hills, Michigan, brother Mark Fettig of Cincinnati, Ohio, brother David Fettig and wife Karen of Reston, Virginia. Paul was preceded in death by his sister Dorothy Ellen Fettig and brother William Fettig. Paul was greatly enriched by his close bond with the Friends of Bill W. for 35 years, yet his greatest fulfillment came from the reunion with his childhood sweetheart Molly, whom he married in May of 1995, in San Pablo Church, Marathon, Florida. He was blessed by Molly's four children and six grandchildren who called him Papa: Cathy Conger and Greg Webb, parents of Reilly and Nora, Craig and Ashley Conger, parents of Chase and Brennan, Kyle Conger, father of Christian and Savanna, and Bill Conger. Paul had the great privilege of teaching and guiding the "Band of Brothers" from the Brindisi Men's Bible Study Group at Davidson College Presbyterian Church following the death of founder Pastor Allen Brindisi in December, 2006. A memorial service celebrating Paul's life will be held 11:00 a.m. Friday May 11, 2012 in the Lingle Chapel at the Davidson College Presbyterian Church with Bishop James Birch of the Diocese of One Spirit Catholic Church, officiating along with Pastor Lib McGregor Simmons and Associate Pastor of Discipleship, Robert Alexander. A receiving will follow in the church parlor. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Community Living Centers, Inc. 33235 Grand River Avenue, Farmington, MI 48336 or via clchomes.org/supportclc/donations.html.
