Patricia Cox was born in Orlando, Florida on July 24, 1927 and lived in Florida for about 18 years before moving to NC. Her family lived in Miami when she was young and she graduated from Miami High School in 1945. The Florida heat wasn’t her favorite so she chose a school in NC, Montreat College. She graduated from Montreat College in 1949 with a BS in Home Economics. She also completed graduate work in Food Services Management.
Her first jobs out of college were as a Dietary Assistant at Broughton Hospital in Morganton and then at Watts Hospital in Durham. Next she went to work for the Dairy Council as a Nutritionist. She had many exciting experiences in this position but probably her favorite were food nutrition segments on local TV shows and also a radio broadcast show. She then began her long career at Duke Power Company as a Commercial Food Service Specialist; after 5 years at Duke, she became the first woman in the US to hold the title of Commercial Advisor. Her job took her all over NC and SC working with club houses, hotels, restaurant, colleges, church kitchens, school lunchrooms, hospitals, and more. Not only was she a very successful career woman, she was involved in many different organizations such as the Charlotte Little Theatre, various Home Economics associations, First Presbyterian in Charlotte; she was in Who’s Who of American Women in 1972-1975 and recognized in Women Executives in 1987-1988.
Patricia was proceeded in death by her beloved mother, Maud Yothers Cox, her father, James Albert Cox and her sister, Florence Anne Cox. Her companion, best friend and the “love” of her life was her dog, Mr. Puck, who passed in 2006. He had such a special place in her heart; she missed him every day, and would perk up when the conversation would turn to stories about Mr. Puck! She is survived by her nephew, Basil Yothers, her niece, Maryanne Yothers, and great nephews, Stuart Eichelbaum and Douglas Marshall.
Pat had many talents and gifts but she is remembered most for her wonderful sense of humor; she kept her friends laughing any way she could. She had a generous heart and strong faith. She loved all animals but especially dogs – they would immediately become her friend.
She felt very blessed to call The Pines her home since August 2007; in Assisted Living and lastly in Health Care where she was blessed to have had excellent care.
A memorial service to celebrate Patricia’s life will be held at The Pines’ Davidson Room on Saturday, November 9 at 10:30 AM. Donations may be made to First Presbyterian Church of Charlotte or The Pines Resident Support Fund.
