Mildred Matthews Turnbull Workman

Mrs. Mildred Turnbull Workman of Davidson died January 15, 2013 at The Pines at Davidson. Mrs. Workman was born August 28, 1915 in Moultrie, Georgia, daughter of the late Samuel Parish and Willie Belle Matthews Turnbull. She attended the public schools in Moultrie and received an AB Degree from Georgia State Womans College (now Valdosta State University) at Valdosta, Georgia in 1936. In 1938 she married William Gatewood Workman, who preceded her in death on July 4, 1995. Dr. and Mrs. Workman and their two children, Bill and Wookie, moved from Emory University in Atlanta to Davidson in 1951, where Dr. Workman had accepted the position of Professor of Psychology at Davidson College. They made their home at 209 Lorimer Road until 1988, when they moved to The Pines. For nine years, in the late 50's and 60's, Mrs. Workman was appointed as a school secretary in the public schools, first at Davidson Elementary, and then at Alexander Junior High School. Mrs. Workman was a founding member of the Board of Directors of The Pines and was an Elder at Davidson College Presbyterian Church. She is survived by her son, William Gatewood Workman, Jr. of Horst, Germany, and her daughter, Eleanor Workman Payne of Davidson; her grandchildren, Gatewood Campbell of Huntersville, Will Payne of Lafayette, Colorado, Will Workman of Lafayette, California, Gatey Workman of Lubeck, Germany, and Anne Zimmermann of Muenster dorf, Germany; her great-grandchildren, Justin Campbell, Hunter Campbell, Stella Payne, Declan Payne, Kenneth Workman, Emma Workman, Walter Workman, Emily Workman, Ivy Workman, Liam Zimmermann, Amylia Zimmermann, Myron Zimmermann, and Mary Zimmermann. A memorial service will be conducted 2:30 P.M Sunday, January 20, 2013 in the sanctuary of Davidson College Presbyterian Church, Main Street, Davidson, NC. The family will receive guests following the service at The Pines at Davidson. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent to the Residence Fund at The Pines at Davidson, 400 Avinger Lane, Davidson, NC 28036 or to Davidson College Presbyterian Church, P. O.
