Melvin Lee Stevens was born the third of four sons to Pastor George and Beatrice Stevens, Sr., in Macon, Mississippi on September 26, 1949.
In hopes of a better life and greater opportunities, the family migrated North. By the early 1950’s they relocated and settled in at Cedar Rapids, Iowa while Melvin was very young.
Most of his childhood memories were formed in Iowa where he grew up and was educated.
After graduating from Washington High School, Melvin went on to further his education attending college in Mason City, Iowa before enlisting in the United States Army in 1972.
After two full years of service to his country, Melvin decided not to re-enlist. It was time for him to settle down and start a family of his own. One year later he wed the love of his life Miss Laura Jones. To this union was born one daughter; Paris LaShea Stevens.
In 2001 they relocated to Charlotte, NC where Melvin would spend years as a career local and long-distance truck driver. When he was not on the road driving he enjoyed many different sporting activities and events but most inclined to bowling. “The President” as he often referred to himself spent a great deal of time indulging in his pastime favorite activities and livening dull moments; even in his final days.
Melvin leaves to mourn his loving wife Laura of almost 43 years, one daughter Paris, two granddaughters Daeyza and Adreonna; three brothers: George Jr. (Diane), Charles (Veronica), Anthony; a host of nieces, nephews and cousins.
A funeral service will be held at 2:00 pm on Saturday, June 16, 2018 at Sherman Memorial Church of God in Christ, Charlotte, NC. The family will receive friends and family for a visitation from 1:00 pm until the start of the service.
