Maynard "Bunt" Walker Powning

September 21, 1931 — February 23, 2011

Maynard Bunt Walker Powning, 79, passed away February 23, 2011 in the presence of his family, from complications of Alzheimers, in Charlotte, NC. He was the son of the late Carolyn (Walker) and Kimball Colby Powning. Bunt leaves his wife, Andrea (Murphy), son, Philip Arbury and his wife, Jennifer (Retherford) and daughter, Caroline Arbury and three beloved grandchildren all of the Charlotte area. He also leaves two sisters and their husbands, Dorothy Penny and Franklin Bill Agnew and Anne and Dr. W. Brem Mayer all of Spring Island, SC and seven beloved nieces and nephews. Bunt leaves his lifelong friends, Drucilla Buffington of Arlington MA and Richard Little of Amherst, NH. Although he travelled the world, he was born in Boston and spent most of his life in Massachusetts. Bunt attended Meadowbrook School in Dover and graduated from Noble and Greenough in 1949 and Harvard College in 1953. He served in the US Air Force in Korea as an Aircraft Controller. In his earlier years Bunt was an avid hunter and fisherman. He also loved to ski. Mr. Powning ran Koehler Manufacturing Company in Marlboro, MA for forty years. His major in psychology, coupled with his great affection for people, guided many of his decisions in the workplace. Several generations of families in Marlboro worked for the company that his grandfather started. He was highly respected for his integrity and sense of fairness. He was loved for his sense of humor. His employees were also his friends. Bunt was a member of YPO, the Somerset Club, the Harvard Club of Boston and Acoaxet and Spindle Rock Clubs of Westport, MA. His passions in life included family and friends, birdinghe loved nature driving his Jaguar sports cars and spending time at his ocean side home in Westport Harbor, MA. A Memorial service will be held at the United Congregational Church in Little Compton, RI on Saturday July 16 at 4:00 pm.
