Mary M. Smith

Mary McKee Smith, 97, of Charlotte, NC passed away on August 14, 2017. Mary was born in Huntersville, NC on March 5, 1920, one of 14 children, to the late John Allen McKee & Mary Hartman McKee. Along with her parents, Mary is preceded in death by her loving husband Cephus M. “Pete” Smith & 11 siblings. She is also preceded in death by great granddaughter, Mary Virginia Arnold.

Mary is survived by her four children: Jean Green & spouse Hubert Russell of Charlotte; James R. “Ronnie” Joyce & special friend Nanda Irons of Raleigh; Carol Joyce Di Re & spouse John of Charlotte; Phillip H. Joyce & wife Debra of Greensboro & Step Daughter Kandace Smith.

Surviving grandchildren are: Scott Query, Lisa Query; James R. Joyce II, Mary Virginia “Jenkie” Arnold & spouse Dan; Marks Lawson Joyce & wife Sheldon; Donald E. Thomas and wife, Amy, Phillip Andrew Thomas; John R. Di Re, Jr.; Benjamin H. Joyce & wife Lisa. Surviving great grandchildren are: Nicholas Query; Wooten and James Joyce; Mary Selwyn, Simmons & Blanche Arnold; Lawson Jr. and Hardin Joyce; Spencer, Kyle & Austin Thomas; Maya & Aiden Di Re; and great-great grandson Wyatt Thomas. Survivors also include Sister Marion M. Elliott and Brother David McKee and many nephews and nieces.

Mary enjoyed watching NASCAR, old movies, TV golf. She loved her church, visiting with family and the beauty of the N. C. Mountains.

A visitation will be held at Mallard Creek Presbyterian Church located at 1600 Mallard Creek Church Rd. West, Charlotte, NC at 10am on Friday, August 18 followed by a service celebrating Mary’s life at 11am at the church. Interment will be at Sharon Memorial Park, 5400 Monroe Road, Charlotte, NC.

In lieu of flowers, Memorial Donations may be made to Mallard Creek Presbyterian Church, Charlotte, NC.
