Mary Scott O’Sullivan, 67, of Huntersville, NC passed away peacefully on Wednesday, April 15, 2020 at Duke University Hospital, Durham, NC surrounded by her loving family. Cremation has been accorded with a burial to be announced at a later date. Memorials may be made to St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital.
Mary Scott O’Sullivan was born September 1, 1952 in Davenport, Iowa to Dennis and Madalyn Phelan Scott. Mary graduated from Assumption High School in 1970. She attended Truman State University, was a member of Delta Zeta Sorority, graduating in 1974 with a B.S. in Education and graduate studies as a Reading Specialist.
Mary was employed with Bethany Homes from 1979 – 1988, Blackhawk Area Special Education Center from 1988 – 1997 as a Special Education Teacher, thereafter moving to Branford CT to teach for Learn, Old Lyme CT and the East Haven School District retiring in 2015. Mary moved to Huntersville, NC and was an active tutor and volunteer during her professional tenure and into retirement.
On July 19, 1997, Mary was united in marriage to Brian O’Sullivan in Bettendorf, IA and moved to Brandford, CT. Mary married the love of her life and best friend. They shared 23 blissful years of marriage filled with love, laughter, travel and fun.
Mary will always be remembered as a remarkable teacher, wonderful story-teller, keen sense of humor, out-going nature, kindness, generosity, and love of family.
Survivors include her husband, Brian O’Sullivan; son, Timothy (Tirina) Scott; son, Steven O’Sullivan; daughter, Stacey ( Steven) Tarasiewicz; and 8 grandchildren, Chloe and Connor Scott, Joe O’Sullivan, Emily Zlemba, Kayti, and Maddie O’Sullivan, Christopher Tarasiewicz, Cole Domingue; one great-grandchild, McKenna O’Sullivan; sister, Julie (Michael) Williams, and many nieces and nephews.
Mary was preceded in death by her parents, Dennis and Madalyn Scott and granddaughter, Ashley O’Sullivan.
