Mark V. DeSarro

Mark V. DeSarro, teacher, coach, friend, father and grandfather, formerly of East Liverpool, died suddenly Saturday, February 25, 2012 at his home in Charlotte, North Carolina. He was 53. Born in East Liverpool, November 26, 1958, he was a son of the late Joseph A. and Nancy Marie Frank DeSarro. He was a 1977 graduate of East Liverpool High School where he was a member of the football and baseball teams. He continued his education at Hiram College and was a member of the football and baseball teams there as well. After college, he continued his interest in baseball and pursued a career as a baseball umpire. He completed training in Bradenton, Florida and umpired nearly every level of the game including local little leagues, NCAA Division I and II in the Tri-State Area and the Class A Professional Leagues. He returned to the area and worked as a science teacher at East Liverpool City Schools. He also was an assistant coach for the varsity football team under Head Coach Bob Thayer at East Liverpool and Wellsville. In 2008, he moved to the Charlotte, North Carolina area and worked as a science teacher at Bailey Middle School. He was also active as a coach for the middle school football team. A member of the former St. Ann's Catholic Church, he was also a member of St. Mark Catholic Church in Huntersville, North Carolina. He will be sadly missed by his beloved daughter, Aubrey DeSarro-Garman, and her husband Jeremy, of Antioch, Tennessee. On December 30, 2011, Mark welcomed his first grandchild, Luca Ross Garman. He will be forever cherished and remembered by his three sisters, Mary Jo Schmidbauer of East Liverpool, Loretta Shafer, of East Liverpool, and Michele Porter, and her husband Mark, of Woodbridge, Virginia. There are two nieces, Jessica Lynn Shafer and Kristina Porter, along with three nephews, Derek Shafer, and his wife Kristy, Ryan Shafer and Spencer Porter and two great-nephews, Carter Jo Moldovan and Chase A. Shafer. Other survivors include many aunts, uncles and cousins, as well as countless friends, co-workers and former and current students. Friends may visit Friday afternoon and evening at the Dawson Funeral Home where the family will be present from 2 to 8 p.m. Fr. Peter Haladej will conduct a Mass of Christian Burial at 10:00 a.m. Saturday at Holy Trinity Parish at St. Aloysius Church. Prior to the Mass, special eulogies by family and close friends will be said at the funeral home at 9:00 a.m. Saturday. Burial will be at St. Elizabeth Cemetery in Wellsville. Following the service, family and friends will gather at the East Liverpool High School cafeteria for fellowship.
