Heaven gained an exception angel Monday, August 8th, 2016. Margaret Lucille Houser Travis of Huntersville, NC, 84, passed away after battling breast cancer, living a full life after surviving polio and a recent period of declining health. We rejoice she is no longer missing her husband Charles Travis and her daughter Donna Travis Spilane and is now free from the burdens of her earthly body. Margaret was a most humble, loving, kind and honorable lady. Even when polio had left her with lifelong limitations, Margaret fulfilled her dream of a large family raising six children with Charles by her side. She retired after 41 years as Credit Manager with Henley Paper Company., now Atlantic Packaging. Margaret loved to read and was a devoted sports fan; especially baseball and football. During football season, you could count on the phone ringing after a big play when her beloved Carolina Panthers were playing. Like her children, Margaret love of animals was evident. She loved her Grand-pups and Grand-kitties who assuredly knew Grandma would share her meals with them. They in return, showered her with kisses and could almost always be found snuggled up with her and getting petted. Regardless of the hurdles she faced in life, Margaret was never one to complain. Instead, she would say, “I shouldn’t complain, I am so blessed and loved.” She recently shared how happy she was knowing her sons Carl, Everett and Tim were happy, doing well and had found love. One of Margaret’s last trips was to Myrtle Beach, SC for Everett and Lynn’s wedding. She was equally as excited when her youngest Timothy proposed to fiancé Niccie. Margaret was so proud of Peggy and her accomplishments in life. Margaret, no doubt saw the likeness to herself in “Peggy”, whom was named appropriately Margaret after her Mother. Margaret’s eyes twinkled when she talked about Peggy and how she was a strong and independent woman. When Margaret could no longer be independent herself; Peggy assumed the monumental task of assuring Margaret’s needs would be met at Carrington Place in the mountains of Wytheville VA.
Margaret’s legacy will be continued by her children; Carl R. and wife Nancy Travis, Margaret A. “Peggy Travis Adkins; Everett M. and wife Lynn Travis; Timothy M. Travis and fiance’ Nicci Kutz. Margaret was blessed with two other “sons” Mike Peterman and wife Pat, and Chuck Peterman and wife Louise. She is also survived by Susan T. Craven and spouse Charles Craven. Numerous Grandchildren and Great Grandchildren survive Margaret as well. She was proud of all her Grandchildren, but Grandsons; Christopher Travis and Jeremy Austin service in the US Marine Corp, made her exceptionally proud as they followed Charles service in the military. Nothing can fill the void left in our hearts where Mom now resides. While our hearts hurt for our loss, Margaret gained Angel status in Heaven. For us, she was already an Angel here on earth.
Rest easy now Mom, we’ve got this! Funeral services will be held at 11:00 am, Saturday, August 13th at Gilead ARP Church, 15303 Beatties Ford Road, Huntersville, NC 28078. The family will be available for a short time after the services to receive friends. Memorials may be made to: American Cancer Society In Memory of Margaret H.
