Mrs. Marjorie Lawrence Stell, 94, of Davidson, NC died Sunday July 3, 2011 at the Pines of Davidson. Born October 11, 1916 in Mobile, Ala she was the daughter of the late Dan and Marion Gerber. Mrs. Stell spent her childhood through graduation in Henderson, NC, graduating in 1933. She attended Peace College in Raleigh, NC becoming one of their first outstanding alumnae. She attended New York University and Presbyterian School of Christian Education. She was employed two years in New York City as secretary to the Director of Personnel for the National Boy Scouts of America before returning to Raleigh where she was employed as the Director of Christian Education at the First Presbyterian Church for two years. In 1940 she married Cecil Lawrence. In 1948 they moved to Charlotte and raised their three children. In 1968 she began her seventeen years of employment at Covenant Presbyterian Church as Co-coordinator of Womens Work, and then became Parish Visitor until 1988. Marjorie always was learning and sharing. Some of her favorite passions were gardening, sports, needlework, travel, bridge and reaching out to others. She was honored with Life Membership of the Women of the Church and Honorary Life Membership by the of Womens Council of Mecklenburg Presbytery in 1966. Memorial Services will be conducted 11:00 a.m. Friday July 8, 2011 at the Davidson College Presbyterian Church with Rev Ken Craig and Rev Bill Tiemann officiating. A reception will follow at the Congregation House. The family will receive friends at 2:00 p.m. in the Living Room at The Pines. Survivors include her children; Marion L. Thomas of Davidson, Patrick Lawrence and wife JB of Concord, Claudia Reid and husband Lewis of Charlotte, grandchildren; Cathy Dover of Harrisburg, Mark Erckman of Matthews, Jennifer Michaud of Sullivans Island, SC, Susan Lamonica of Mooresville, Blair Mathis of Mt. Pleasant, SC, Ashley Reid of Sullivans Island, SC and fifteen great grandchildren. In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her first husband, Dr. J. Cecil Lawrence, second husband, Dr. Lawrence I Stell whom she married in 1997 and her brother, George D. Gerber.
