John W. Haynes, Jr. USMC Retired
Major John Washington Haynes, Jr. 78 of Newton, NC died Saturday March 12, 2011 at his home at Abernethy Laurels. Born June 10, 1932 in Woodruff, SC he was the son of the late John W. Haynes, Sr. and Mamie Gallman Haynes. He attended Clemson College, was a Freemason and Shriner, and a member of Mecklenburg Community Church. Major Haynes began his military career in the U.S. Navy upon leaving Clemson. He was selected to attend Naval Flight School in 1952 and was designated a Naval Aviator in 1954. Engaged as a pilot, he served his country in the VMGR-252 Squadron at the U.S. Marine Corp Air Station at Cherry Point, NC. Major Haynes served in numerous capacities and different climes, including the 1st Lebanon Crisis, Cuban Crisis, Dominican Republic Crisis, Haitian Crisis, the Antarctic and Viet Nam. He also had the privilege of piloting the plane carrying Sir Edmund Hilary on one of his expeditions. Major Haynes retired on April 30th, 1971. Mr. Haynes, after retiring from the military, worked in management at American Bank & Stationary Company in Jacksonville, FL and Charlotte, NC from 1971 to 1975. He then worked for Ohio Medical Company in Charlotte, NC and Nashville, TN until his retirement in 1991. Memorial services will be conducted 4:00 p.m. Saturday March 26 in the Chapel of Raymer Funeral Home. The family will receive friends following the service. Burial will be at a later date at Arlington National Cemetery. Mr. Haynes was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 55 years, Helen, this past November. Mr. Haynes leaves to cherish his memory his son, John W. (Jay) Haynes III (Tracy) of Spruce Pine, NC; daughters, Pamela Louise Pigue (David) of Melrose, FL, Jody Lynn Brotherton (Allen) of Denver, NC, and Hedy Leigh Haynes (Fred Norchi) of Charlotte; grandchildren, Matthew and Ryan Haynes, Melissa, Aaron and Hollie Pigue, Haynes and Gray Brotherton; step grandchildren, Kaycie, Ryan and Joshua Burrell; great grandchildren Everette and Madyson Haynes; step great grandchild Lucas McKibben and sister Mary H. Laughton (Milton) of Beaufort, NC. In lieu of flowers, memorials in honor of Major John Haynes, Jr. may be made to Operation Homefront, 8930 Fourwinds Drive Suite 340, San Antonio, TX 78239 to assist veterans and their families, or Disabled American Veterans, P.O. Box 14301, Cincinnati, OH 45250.
