Huntersville

Linda Overbey McLaughlin, 80, of Huntersville, North Carolina passed away on February 11, 2025.

Linda was born in Johnson City, Tennessee on September 13, 1944 to the late John William Overbey and Dorothy Robertson Overbey.

Along with her parents, Linda is preceded in death by her brother, John William Overbey (Bill).

Linda is survived by her husband, Philip Michael McLaughlin (Mike) of 58 years, her son Michael Scott McLaughlin, his wife Laura and sons Bailey (24) and Jacob (20) as well as her daughter Jennifer “Jenna” McLaughlin Mayhew, her husband Chad and daughters Treston (24) and Caitlin (22).

Linda grew up in Radford, Virginia where her father was dean of the University. A tomboy at heart, she loved the outdoors, sports, and playing golf with her father. She attended Longwood College earning an education degree. During a summer session at Chapel Hill, she met Mike and they married in 1966. Through many moves (fifteen she loved to tell people!), Linda was the glue that held the family together working tirelessly to make each house a home filled with endless amounts of love. She sought opportunities to volunteer and engage with each new school and community making it that much easier to make it feel like a home.

The common thread throughout her life was caring for and providing for others. First and foremost it was to provide for her family during the moves to facilitate the ease of their adjustment as new environments and situations arose. During ensuing years, that dedication extended to caring for parents as they advanced in age, moving them closer to her and even into the house when it became necessary. She expanding her caring nature through teaching assignments in Virginia, North Carolina, Maryland and New Jersey and later stints in real estate in Colorado and North Carolina where satisfying the families’ relocation needs was paramount. Linda enjoyed sobriety during her last 24 years. During that period, she sponsored and helped numerous individuals in their own journeys in her quest to keep providing and caring for others.

And then there were the grandchildren! Boy did “Glin” love the four of them. She never missed an opportunity to babysit, pick up at school, shop with, travel to or call. Because of geographical separation, and the ever present need for family, Linda decided there would be an annual family gathering in the NC mountains, scheduled around the camp attending/counseling grandkids.

This summer, the family is going for the fifteenth year and everyone will be there. Linda’s ashes will be spread at that time in her favorite mountain lake, under a waterfall she visited often.

There is no memorial service scheduled at this time. Please consider a donation in Linda’s memory to the Alzheimer’s Association to aid in the fight against this terrible disease.
