After a long and happy life, Kenneth Leroy Harrell passed away peacefully on Thursday, November 19, 2015 in his home in Mooresville, NC.
Born in Haywood County, he was the son of late James S. and Cora Morrow Harrell. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by 3 brothers and 2 sisters.
He was a Navy veteran of World War II. During his time in the Navy he married his high school sweetheart Dorothy (Dot) McElroy and they shared 71 years of marriage. Together they built and ran Harrell Motor Sales which was the one of the few Land Rover Dealerships on the East Coast. Many may remember the annual Land Rover Caravans from Harrell Motor Sales to the Blue Ridge Parkway. He loved fishing, golf, horseback riding and gardening. He loved growing vegetables and sharing them. He never met a stranger.
He is survived by the loves of his life, Dorothy M. Harrell; 2 daughters, Nena Harrell, of Charlottesville and Pola Harrell Wilhelm and her husband, Gene, of Mooresville and their 4 children; 9 grandchildren and 2 great-grandchildren. He is survived by his brother, Ray, and his wife and numerous nieces, nephews and grand-nieces and grand nephews.
The family would like to thank the Hospice of Iredell County for their loving care. Lindsay, JoAnn, Brea, Katie, Barbara, Billie, Jan and Kaye are special angels who looked after us all. Also, a special thank you to our 2 Tanyas and Crystal who we could not have made it without. And, Jan, "thank you" cannot convey our love and appreciation. His “Miss Americas” can attest to his wonderful sense of humor that carried us through.
A remembrance service will be held in the Chapel at Church Hill Senior Living, 140 Carriage Club Dr., Mooresville on Friday, November 27 at 1:00 PM. Memorials may be made to Hospice of Iredell at 2347 Simonton Road, Statesville, NC 28625.
