Kate Mitchell Newton Stables, age 53, died peacefully at home on Mother's Day morning May 12, 2024.
Kate was one of a kind. She had a sense of humor and zeal for life that lifted up all who knew her. She ran marathons, told hilarious stories, loved music and dancing. Her carefree spirit inspired others to join her, living life to the fullest. She was a present and forever friend to many, encouraging others to know their value and strength.
As a child in Memphis, Kate danced ballet, loved horseback riding and ran cross country. She was close to her brother, Henry, and beloved by many, including her classmates at St. Mary's School and Hutchison School. She earned her Bachelor's in Geography and Master's in Urban and Regional Planning from the University of Tennessee in Knoxville, a second home to her, the place where her grandparents lived. Throughout her life, Kate was always up for an adventure and spent a summer in Yellowstone National Park, studied in Kenya and climbed various mountains in South America.
After college, she moved to Cornelius, NC, where she started her family, loved lake life, made many friends and worked for the County of Mecklenburg. She helped plan the popular Birkdale Village, where families continue to flock to outdoor music events.
However, Kate found her true passion when she became a mother to Elliot and Frances. She provided a loving home, full of tenderness, humor, and furry friends, including her Terrier, Mia, and Berne-doodle, Kevin.
Kate is predeceased by her brother, Henry Newton, her father, Dr. Douglas Newton, and her grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Ernest Newton (Margaret) and Mr. Harold Gooch and Mrs. Alice Williams. Kate leaves behind her beloved daughters, Elliott and Frances Stables (and their father Scott Stables), her mother Alice Newton, siblings Nathan, Mackenzie, Whitney and Matthew Wicks-Newton, nephew Jack Newton, cousins Polly Kelly, Eleanor and Molly Aiken, Louise Burruss, Neill Townsend, Emily Patton, Uncle Edward Albers Newton (Diane), Aunt Margaret "Meg" Aiken and Uncle Mike Aiken.
Celebrations of life will occur in Cornelius, NC on May 18th 10am-1pm at BoatYard Lake Norman 18418 Statesville Road 28031 and in Memphis, TN this Fall. There will also be a private gathering for family late summer.
In lieu of flowers, please send donations in Kate's honor to St. Jude's Children Hospital (stjude.org) and continue her fight against cancer. Or send your gifts to ASPCA (secure.aspca.org) and support the animals she so adored.
