Joseph Cognato, 82, of Cornelius, North Carolina passed away on July 25, 2020. Joseph was born in Brooklyn, New York on December 20, 1937 to the late Paolo Cognato and Anna Mandelkow.
Along with his parents, Joseph is preceded in death by his wife Justine Cognato; son Christopher Cognato; brothers Michael Cognato, Thomas Cognato, Arthur Cognato, Stephen Cognato, and Paul Cognato. Sisters Anna Graves, Josephine D’Amato, Marion Cohen, and Mary Mascarelli. He is survived by his wife Jeanne; daughters Justine Cognato, Corinn Mercer (Jacob); step-daughter, Amanda Long; sisters Annette Horgan, Helen Giovine, and Eileen Hamilton; grandchildren Bianca Hayes (Malcolm), Gabrielle Martucci, Nicholas Martucci, Grace Cognato, Patrick Cognato, Cailyn Mercer, and Landon Mercer. A great granddaughter Cecelia Hayes. Also left to honor his memory are many nieces, nephews and beloved friends.
A Memorial service will be held privately by the family at a later time.

Joseph was a dedicated NYC Transit Authority bus driver for 25 years. He was a US Army veteran of the 11th Special Forces Group (Airborne). He loved music, wood-working, and was an avid marksman.
