Johnny "Mike" Michael Hager

March 10, 1949 — October 3, 2023

Cornelius

Johnny Michael "Mike" Hager, passed away on October 3, 2023. Born in Cornelius, NC on March 10, 1949, Mike grew up in a warm and loving family. His parents, William E. Hager and Dorothy Jackson Hager, built the house Mike resided in most of his life. His mother, "Dot" Hager retired as Cornelius' old town Librarian.

Mike retired as an animal control officer for the Charlotte Mecklenburg Police Department, where he dedicated himself to ensuring the welfare and safety of both people and animals. His love for animals coupled with his unique social skills made his career choice a perfect fit.

Outside of work, Mike had a deep love for his family and enjoyed every moment spent with them. His wife Denise A. Hager was his rock, providing unwavering support throughout their journey together. They first met when she was 12, when he dated her older sister. Their relationship renewed in 1987 eventually marrying October 3, 2015.

Mike's birds played an essential role in his life. Known as the "Birdman", Mike had Macaws, African Grays, Amazons, Cockatiels, a Parakeet, and even once had a Peacock. His favorite bird, Tucker, would often be seen on his shoulder outside. Mike had an undeniable talent for cultivating life. Whether it was tending to his flower garden, or planting and picking his vegetable garden, his green thumb never failed him. He loved nature and was outside as much as possible. Mike's faith was also an integral part of his life. He was actively involved in the Cornelius Church of God, where he found strength, and fellowship. The church held a special place in his heart, as did the people within its walls.

Mike leaves behind a loving wife Denise A. Hager; stepson Casey Smith (Sarah); stepdaughter Summer Smith (Adam); grandchildren Preston, Sydney, Skylin, Samantha, Michael, and Walker; niece Becky Hager (Grayson, GA); and his faithful canine companion Benji.  Though he may no longer be physically present with us, Mike's spirit will forever live on in our hearts. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother Billy Hager; and his stepson Brandon Smith.

Mike was a remarkable man who touched the lives of many. May we carry his spirit of love, compassion, and devotion with us always. His infectious smile, quick humor, and good will and kindness will remain in our hearts to cherish.

A visitation will take place on Saturday, October 7, 2023, from 11:00 AM to 12:00 PM at Cornelius Church of God in Cornelius, NC.
