Joe Bergen McGee

April 25, 1936 — September 17, 2024

Joe passed from this life into his eternal home on September 17, 2024.

He is survived by his daughter Angela Daugherty (Donnie Daugherty); brothers, Roy Mack McGee and Jerry McGee; granddaughters Amber Ranee Daugherty and Tiffany Nicole Daugherty; stepson Clee Laster and his son Van Laster; and his first wife Judy Brown Cooper McGee Holder.

He is predeceased by his wife Norma Wittschen McGee; his parents Vance C. McGee, Sr. & Myrtle E. McGee; sister Lois Helms; brothers Thomas G. McGee, Paul J. McGee, Doug McGee, and Vance McGee Jr.; his grandson Tad Allen Daugherty; and stepson Michael William Cooper.

Joe spent his early years in the Mill Villages of Belmont, playing baseball and swimming in the Catawba River.  He was active in Boy Scouts and attained the rank of "Life Scout" before moving to Charlotte and a neighborhood locals called "Goat Hill".  There he attended Nevin Elementary, Derita Jr. High, and graduated from North Mecklenburg in 1955, where he was a student bus driver.

After graduation, Joe joined the Naval Reserve, serving for seven years.  The majority of his working life consisted of more than thirty years as a Certified Meat Inspector with the Atlantic & Pacific Packing Plant on Hovis Road in Charlotte.

Joe loved using his spare time for sports and hunting with his family and friends.  He was an avid fan of Duke basketball and had the gear to prove it.  Joe also spent time as a member at the American Legion Post 353 Paw Creek, as well as the Shriners Club.  Inexplicably, he truly enjoyed mowing his grass and spent hours at that activity!

His love for Edgemont and Wilson Creek was only surpassed by his love for his daughter, Angela!

A life lived well and we will miss him!

A final sincere "Thank You" to all of Joe's caregivers who were so good to him in his final days.
