Joan Church Sherrill, 88, widow of Kress Newton Sherrill, lifelong resident of Mooresville, NC died very serenely on October 20th, 2024.
Joan was born in Mooresville, NC to the late Eulalia Benfield Church and Roy Glover Church. She was preceded in death by her husband of 52 years, Kress Sherrill, her sisters Margaret Helms, Mary Adams, Ruby Check, Helen Beaver, her brothers Roy, Paul and Buck Church and her granddaughter, Caroline Amanda Sherrill.
She is survived by her children, Rick (Judy) Wagner, and Kirk Sherrill (Mary), and step-son, Hal Sherrill and one sister, Ann Smith. Also surviving are 4 grandchildren, Ben (Joanna) Wagner, and Samantha (Chris) Bender, Matt (Heather) Sherrill and Drew Sherrill.Joan was also blessed with 3 great grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews whom she loved dearly.
Joan graduated from Mooresville High School in 1954, where she was proudly a majorette and class beauty. After graduating, she began working at Mooresville Mills as a switchboard operator. Her longest career was in public relations for several NASCAR teams with her favorite being Dale Earnhardt. She planned and hosted many personal and professional parties and dinners with extreme finesse. Joan always had a way of making you feel special and welcome. She was a loving and very caring soul. Joan had a strong faith that showed every day that she lived. She was a faithful member of Fieldstone Presbyterian Church where she served in so many roles over the years. She chaperoned the youth group, she hosted the Wednesday night dinners, supporting her church family however called.
Joan loved her family and always made “home” a place where you always wanted to go and knew that you would be welcomed with loving arms. Joan and Kress loved having fun, dancing and sharing wonderful times with friends. She was a “bit of a ham” at times, but she did it very genuinely and with much talent, even into her 80’s. She was always the person that you wanted at every gathering. Her final six years were spent at The Pines of Davidson where she loved entertaining the residents and staff and became loved by all. She loved The Pines staff who care for her so genuinely over those last years.
We will celebrate and say goodbye to Joan but her loving, faithful, and compassionate spirit will stay with us forever. A memorial service will be held at 1pm on Thursday, October 24th at Fieldstone Presbyterian Church. A graveside service will follow at Glenwood Cemetery, in Mooresville.Visitation will precede the service, at noon. The Funeral arrangements will be handled by Raymer-Kepner Funeral Home in Huntersville, NC.
