Jerome Michael Petry

November 3, 1942 — October 27, 2024

Charlotte

Jerome Michael Petry, affectionately known as Jerry, Jer, or Pop Pop passed away peacefully on October 27, 2024, in Charlotte, North Carolina. Born on November 3, 1942, in Ada, Minnesota, Jerry lived a life marked by intellect, kindness, and wit.

Jerry graduated from St. John's University (MN) and upon graduation married his local sweetheart, Esther Nordby. While receiving his masters at University of North Dakota and undertaking further doctoral studies at Northern Illinois University they had two children before settling in Jamestown, New York to raise their four children.

For nearly 30 years, Jerry dedicated his career to educating students as a college professor at Jamestown Community College as well as visiting professor at several other affiliated universities and colleges in western NY. He taught a vast range of college courses including US and world history, geography, political science, and economics. He was unbeatable at Trivial Pursuit.

A cherished memory for his family is the summer of 1977, when he took them on an unforgettable three-month car trip across the entire United States. Jerry and Esther drove four kids all under the age of 12 in the Oldsmobile Custom Cruiser with only AM radio before the days of ipads, portable screens, or online maps and navigation systems. Together, they visited relatives and significant historical sites, during which he eagerly shared his passion for history with his children, fostering their curiosity, sense of adventure and patience.

Following his retirement to North Carolina in 1997, Jerry enjoyed traveling extensively across the United States, Europe, and a remarkable trip to China. His zest for life extended to his hobbies as well; he was an avid sports fan, especially devoted to the Minnesota Vikings and Minnesota Twins, and he delighted in supporting the Johnnies (St. John's athletics). While in North Carolina he also became a fan of Davidson College basketball and attended many games with family.

Jerry is remembered fondly not only for his academic intelligence but also for his proficiency in bridge, cribbage, billiards, juggling, tennis, and cooking which made him a beloved figure among friends and family alike. His famous chili, popcorn, tea and ice cubes were enjoyed by many but was unsuccessful in convincing his family to share his pleasure of smoking or scotch. He is survived by his sons Jeff (Linda) Petry of Davidson NC, Mark (Amber) Petry of Washington DC, and Eric (Krista) Petry of Ashville NY, son-in-law  Dr. William White of Canton CT, as well as his grandchildren: Andrew (Hailey) Petry, Anna Petry, Abigail Petry, Hannah White, Noah White, Clara Petry, Luke Petry, Chloe Petry, and Collin Petry. He leaves behind his loyal cat companion, Betsy "Puddy".

Jerry was preceded in death by his loving wife, Esther Nordby Petry, and his daughter, Nancy Petry. He was also preceded by his parents, Harry August Petry and Catherine Whalen Petry, and his sister, Kathleen Petry Keefe.

Jerry will be deeply missed by all who knew him. His legacy of kindness, knowledge, and humor will continue to resonate in the hearts of his family and friends.

A celebration of his life will be conducted at 11 a.m. Saturday, November, 9, 2024 at the Episcopal Church of St. Peter-by-the-Lake, Denver NC with the Rev Dr. Ron Taylor officiating. Burial will follow in the Memorial Garden.
