Janet Elaine Summy passed away peacefully at home on December 7th, 2023 with her family lovingly by her side.
Janet was born August 6, 1950, to Hazel Frances and Gerald Lloyd Metzger in Connellsville, PA. She would meet her husband of 52 years, Alan Dwight Summy, while attending Connellsville Area High School. She graduated from Indiana University of Pennsylvania.
Family was always Janet’s priority. As the wife of an officer of the U.S. Coast Guard, she had to move her brood many times over the years and did so uncomplainingly. A fierce advocate for her children, she always made sure they had the best educational opportunities in each new city or town. Her loving nature made every place feel like home for her family and the place they most wanted to be. All were welcome in her home and many a day found neighborhood friends stopping by.
Janet was a passionate person with an artistic soul. She loved creating beauty around her, whether through decorating, painting or crafting. Her creations adorn many of her family’s homes and are loved and cherished possessions. Janet threw herself into everything that she did with unwavering commitment. As a teacher, she spent many hours working on lesson plans and activities for her pre-school students. She sang silly songs and never hesitated to get down on the floor with the kids. During her tenure as an historical interpreter at Mt. Vernon, she read countless books on George Washington and had the ability to answer virtually any question about our first president. Later, in retirement, she displayed the same passion when it came to her four grandchildren, creating special spaces for them in her home and providing endless supplies of paints, paper, pencils and other materials for creative endeavors.
Janet is survived by her husband, CAPT Alan Summy, USCG (ret), her brothers, Kevin Metzger and Eric Metzger, her sister, Diane Bovard, her children, Kirsten Olesniewicz, Justin Summy and Courtney Khoumrasmy, her sons-in-law, Terry Olesniewicz and Kheuang Khoumrasmy, her daughter-in-law Mai Phung and her grandchildren, Austen, Lucas, Willow and River.
Janet was a beautiful person inside and out. She was kind and cared deeply for the people around her. She made an impact on many people’s lives and will be forever missed.
