Thelma Janet Pyrtle Calary, passed away peacefully at her daughter's home Easter morning, 27 March 2016, just shy of her 85th birthday. She is preceded in death by her beloved husband, Charles William (Crispens) Calary, her parents, and two brothers.
Born 3 April 1931, in Winston-Salem, North Carolina, Janet Calary was the daughter of David M. Pyrtle and Mary Holbrook Pyrtle. She was raised in Winston-Salem, Roanoke, and Baltimore. Janet graduated from Eastern High School in Baltimore and received a degree in music from Western Maryland College where she met her husband. She married Charles on Christmas Eve 1953. After a short residence in Roanoke, Va, Janet and Charles returned to Winston-Salem where they lived for almost 30 years raising a family.
They moved to Oak Island, N.C. after becoming empty-nesters and bought a real estate management company. After 15 years Janet and Charles retired to Palm Harbor, FL. After the death of Charles in 2000, Janet moved first to Longs, S.C. and then to Huntersville, N.C.
Janet was talented at the piano and organ and played for Messiah Moravian Church in Winston-Salem. She was also very talented at needle-crafts and her beautiful pieces she made, hung throughout her home. Janet was the consummate Southern lady that always put others before herself. She always had a kind word and smile for anyone she met, Janet touched the hearts of many. She will be missed and thought of often, and live on forever in her crafts and our hearts.
Janet is survived by her two sons, Charles William Crispens Calary, Jr. (Pam Calary) of Tampa, FL, David Pyrtle Calary (Denise Calary) of Southport, NC; a daughter Melanie Barton (Jimmy Barton) of Mt. Ulla, NC; and a grand-daughter, Lily Calary of Tampa, FL
A Celebration of Life Service was held at Bethel
Presbyterian Church in Cornelius, NC on 20 April 2016.
