James Oliver Wesson, Jr, 74, of Davidson, NC passed away on December 5, 2020 at Atrium Health Cabarrus after a hard-fought battle with Covid-19.
Jim was born in Charlotte, NC on July 21, 1946 to the late James O. Wesson, Sr. and Frances Long Wesson. He is survived by his beloved wife of 52 years and college sweetheart, Glenda Lowe Wesson. Glenda always called him her “Gem Jim.” He is also survived by his daughters, Lori Wesson Horn (fiancé, Uli von der Fuhr) from Concord, NC and Lisa Wesson Lug (husband, Will) from Huntersville, NC; grandsons, Donald Horn III and Stephen Horn of Concord, NC, Clayton Horn (wife, Ada) of Hickory, NC, and Carson and Wesley Lug of Huntersville, NC. He was anticipating the birth of his first great grandchild next June. He is also survived by a brother, Richard Wesson (wife, Cathy) of High Shoals, NC.
Jim was a 1964 graduate of Harding High School and a 1969 graduate of North Carolina State University. He was an owner and Vice President of Wesson, Taylor, Wells and Associates, a successful data processing consulting firm. His partners handled business and sales, but Jim’s role was always to manage the employees. He loved people.
Throughout the years, Jim had many different hobbies. He loved cars and has been a member of the Model A Club, the Miata club and the Corvette club. He was a member of the Lake Norman Rod and Gun Club and Rowan County Wildlife Association. He loved groundhog hunting with his grandsons and his friend, Bill West. He is a former member of the Peninsula Country Club and the Peninsula Yacht Club.
He has served as a deacon at Pritchard Memorial Baptist Church, First Baptist Church, and Carmel Baptist Church in Charlotte, NC. He also served as a deacon in his current church, Central Baptist Church in Kannapolis, NC. Through the years he has enjoyed playing his French Horn in the church orchestras. He loved to work at the Food Pantry each month. He also enjoyed spending time at Richard’s Coffee shop in Mooresville, NC, playing his guitar and hanging out with the veterans. However, his most favorite pastime is spending time with his wife, two daughters, and five grandsons.
A sweet lady from his church, Carrie Ann Furr, most eloquently paid tribute to Jim when she wrote:
“Perhaps one of the hardest things to deal with as a member of a church is going through the pain of losing your friends. Losing those gentle giants that God has put in your path. My husband and I looked up to Jim Wesson. He was always a kind, gentle soul with the biggest smile. He was so passionate about everything he spoke about. His wife would talk about him in Wednesday night Bible study class with such a big smile on her face. She would praise him and say what a good husband he was. She would talk about him with such love and awe. Her eyes would twinkle. My husband and I would watch them cuddle in the pew at church and think how sweet they were. We would hear them talk about each other with such love in their hearts and voices. Jim was so tall when he would enter a room. His very presence was known right away. His gentleness just immediately put you at ease and comfort. You knew he was a man of God who genuinely loved his wife, daughters, grandchildren, friends and strangers. I can’t even imagine having church service without him sitting in his chair blowing the horn God gave him talent to bless us with. My heart has been aching so badly. My husband’s heart too. Jim Wesson, we know your faith became sight and you are in complete awe and worship of Jesus right now, but you will forever be missed on this earth by so many people that love you. Rest in peace my brother in Christ. We will see you again one day.”
The family would like to thank the doctors and nurses in the ICU who took care of Jim, but they would especially like to thank Kathy McLary, a nurse from the rapid response team. She lovingly took care of Jim and comforted him prior to him being ventilated. Most impressively, she never lost sight of the fact that she was not only taking care of Jim, but also his family who were so heartbroken and desperate because they could not be with or do anything to console or help their beloved husband and daddy. Her kindness will never be forgotten.
A graveside service will be held at 10:00 am, Saturday, December 12, 2020 at Sharon Memorial Park in Charlotte, NC. Family and friends are welcome to attend wearing a mask.
Memorial donations may be made to Central Baptist Church in Kannapolis, NC or to Wounded Warriors Project.
