Mr. James C. Howard, Jr., 86, of Huntersville, better known as Jim by his friends or Corbitt or Uncle Bubba by his loved ones, passed away peacefully in his home on April 19, 2011. He is survived by his beloved wife of 59 years, Betsy Ware Howard formerly of Reidsville, NC, their three sons Rev. [Jimmy] James C. Howard, III, M.Div of Huntersville, NC, his wife Cheryl and their children, [Cory] James C. Howard IV and Holly Howard Hartsell and husband Shea, son Joel D. Howard from Terrell, NC, his wife Kimberly and daughter Melanee, son Gary W. Howard of Kings Mountain, NC, his wife Ami and sons Justin, Holden and daughter Addison, and Jims sister Helen Boone and her husband Walter. Jim was a faithful member of Huntersville United Methodist Church for over 35 years. During that time he served in numerous offices and capacities but one of his joys was serving on a building team to help clean up the Eastern North Carolina area in the aftermath of Hurricane Floyd. Jim was a lifelong career employee of Southern Bell [now AT & T], beginning as a lineman and progressing throughout his career to supervisory positions and finally serving in a technical capacity advising, instructing and teaching with regard to telecommunication installations, maintenance and repair. He also enjoyed serving as assistant Scoutmaster of Boy Scout Troop 420, in Laurinburg, NC. His hobbies included working, gardening, spending time with his family, keeping up the family farm and more working. Jim faithfully served his country during World War II in the United States Navy. His tour of duty spanned the entire Pacific theater and it ended engaged with the occupational forces in Japan. His medals include: American: Victory World War II: Asiatic Pacific and three stars, Philippine Liberation and one star. He was born in Sherrills Ford, NC to [Jim] James C. Howard, Sr. and Florence Saunders. He was preceded in death by both parents and a sister Elizabeth Howard Moore who was married to John H. Moore. Funeral Services will be conducted 2:00 p.m. Monday April 25, 2011 at Huntersville United Methodist Church with Rev. Michael Goode officiating. Burial will follow at Northlake Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends prior to the service from 1:00 to 2:00 pm at the Church. His family is deeply grateful to Hospice and Palliative Care of Lake Norman and also to his oncologist and the staff at Carolina Oncology in Huntersville, NC. In lieu of flowers, Jims family asks that memorials be made to Huntersville United Methodist Church at 14005 Stumptown Rd., Huntersville, NC 28078 or Hospice and Palliative Care of Lake Norman at 705 Griffith St., Davidson, NC 28036.
