JACK RUSS CONKWRIGHT, 91, of Lake Norman died June 2. Born May 3, 1925 in Champaign, Ill. to Courtland E. Conkwright and Mary Russ Conkwright Mock. He was the stepson of J. Olin Mock of Charlotte. Jack was raised in Charlotte, attending city schools graduating from Central High School, class of 1943. He saw active duty during World War II throughout the European Theatre serving with the V Corps. Artillery, 953 Battalion from 1943 to 1946. Upon his return he attended Dauphin School of Arts, Pennsylvania Academy of fine Arts, and Queens College, after which he was associated with the Observer Printing House as Art Director and then the Wachovia Corporation as Design Coordinator and Curator of the Wachovia Art Collection. He retired in 1975 to pursue a career in landscape painting. He exhibited in Galleries and Museums throughout the Southeast. He was known among his friends for his wonderful hospitality and excellent dinner parties. His paintings grace his home and the homes of many friends and relatives. Everyone who knew Jack marveled at his detailed and accurate memory of film and literature he loved.
Jack is survived by is companion of 67 years, Richard E. Wardlow, "Snick," his loyal and loving pup, brother James W. Mock and Courtland C. Conkwright; sisters, Sally Mock Dillon and Sandra Brubaker along with a number of nieces, nephews and dear friends.
A gathering to celebrate Jack's infectious smile and humor will be held at 2:00pm Sunday, June 12 at the home.
Memorial contributions may be made to St. Jude's Children's Hospital or a local Humane Society of choice.
