Irwin Stuart Goldstein passed away peacefully at his home in Davidson on August 30, 2014. He was with his family. Irwin Goldstein loved his precious daughters and his parents and broader family very much. He was fortunate to find a career her loved - philosophy - which he taught and wrote driven with great passion. He strongly identified with his Jewish ethnic and religious heritage. Irwin was born on July 12, 1947 in Windsor, Canada and raised in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Having studied in England and Scotland in the 1970s, he then received his PhD in philosophy from The University of Edinburgh. While living abroad he hitchhiked across Europe. When he returned home he traveled extensively throughout America with his new Scottish bride. Irwin loved art, travel, and rock and roll. He valued traveling throughout North America and Europe to philosophy conferences throughout his career including trips in recent years to Switzerland and the Rocky Mountains of Canada. Irwin lived with a never-ending wonder and excitement for life and the world. He is deeply beloved by his two daughters. Irwin took pride in being a devoted and loving father. As a professor, Irwin loved teaching at Davidson College for the past 31 years, sharing his passion for knowledge with his students. But life with him as a father was a beautiful humanities class every day of our lives. Irwin's gentle, kind presence and unique spirit will be sorely missed. Irwin is survived by Alison Goldstein, his two daughters, Rachel Goldstein and Sheena Goldstein, sister, Saundra Feher, and nephew Vincent Feher. Funeral Services will be conducted 2:00 p.m. Tuesday September 2, 2014 in the Chapel of Raymer-Kepner Funeral Home with Rabbi Shields officiating. Burial will follow in Mimosa Cemetery in Davidson, NC. The family will receive friend prior to the service from 1:00 to 2:00 p.m. at the funeral home.
