Gwendolyn McAuley

Gwendolyn Alexander McAuley, 83, died November 28, 2016 at The Pines in Davidson. She was married for 62 years to Edwin “Ed” McAuley, also a resident of The Pines. A native of Huntersville, Gwen was born July 4, 1933, to William G. and Lillie Douglas Alexander. In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by her sibling, Merle Youngblood and Audrey Dick, both of Huntersville; Louise Harris of Raleigh; Walter “Bud” Alexander and Marshall “Duck” Alexander, both of Clover, SC; Bettye Knox of Cornelius; and Marverine Thomas of Westlake, OH.

She was retired from Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools after working as a teacher’s assistant at Huntersville and Statesville Road elementary schools. An active and devoted member of Hopewell Presbyterian Church for many years, she served in various capacities including president of the Women of the Church. She also volunteered at many Red Cross blood drives and delivered Meals on Wheels. A loving wife, sister, mother and grandmother, she enjoyed spending time with her family, growing flowers, shopping with her sisters, going to yard sales, and walking on the beach.

A service to celebrate her life will be held at 11 am, Thursday, December 1, 2016 at Hopewell Presbyterian Church, with burial to follow at the church cemetery. The family will receive friends at the church after the service.

In addition to her husband, she is survived by a sister, Jane Quick of Laurinburg; daughter, Joy McAuley of Charlotte; son, Mark McAuley (Cathy) of Huntersville; grandchildren, Christy Stone (Rocky) of Statesville, and Dillon McAuley of Charlotte; and great-granddaughters, LeAnna and Hunter.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Hopewell Presbyterian Church, 10500 Beatties Ford Rd., Huntersville, NC 28078; or to Hospice & Palliative Care of Lake Norman, 705 Griffith St., Suite 203, Davidson, NC 28036. The family wished to thank the wonderful caring staffs of The Pines at Davidson, The Laurels at Highland Creek, and Hospice of Lake Norman.
