George E. “Skip” Hughes, Jr., 74, of Charlotte, NC passed away and went to be with the Lord on December 28, 2018. Skip was born in Portland, Maine and raised in Wilmington, NC where he lived throughout his adult life before moving to the Charlotte area in 2016 after the passing of his wife. Skip is preceded by his wife, Shirley Holloway Hughes, and his parents, George E. Hughes Sr. and Natalie Spears Hughes. He is survived by his daughters, Renee Hughes of Huntersville, NC, Holly Johnson (Rodney) of Huntersville, NC and Sheri O’Neal (Jim) of Wilmington, NC; his two grandchildren, Hannah and Grant Johnson; his two brothers, Warren Hughes (Mary Anne) of Little Switzerland, NC and Michael Hughes (Becky) of Wilmington, NC; and a number of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. After being honorably discharged from the US Air Force in 1969, Skip worked for BellSouth/AT&T until his retirement. Skip loved his family, his pets, UNC Tarheel basketball, the TV show, Fixer Upper, and Lowe’s Home Improvement stores.
A memorial service honoring Skip’s life will be held on January 12, 2019 at 2:00 pm in the Chapel at First Baptist Church, 411 Market Street, Wilmington, NC. The service will be officiated by Pastor Jim Herchenhahn, Senior Pastor at Riley's Creek Baptist Church in Rocky Point. The family requests that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA) or the Humane Society.
