Frederick R. Cranwell, 86, flew unto the arms of the angels on September 19, 2021 after a short but valiant battle against brain cancer.
Fred was born at home in Union City, NJ on January 25,1935 during the great blizzard of 1935. Although he would go on to live in many places, he would always remain a proud son of Union City. He had an award winning career in both journalism and the world of sports. He began his career as a copy boy at the Hudson Dispatch, became a well respected sports writer at the Jersey Journal and spent several years as assistant Sports Editor at the NY Daily News. He did a three year stint with the fledgling ABA, working for the Pittsburgh Condors. His great love, however, was St Peter's University of Jersey City where he spent many years of his working life. He was the Sports Information Director during the glory days of St. Peter's basketball and later worked as assistant to the president up until his retirement in 2005. He retired to Lake Norman NC in that year and spent many happy seasons in the sun on the lake, on his boat and welcoming friends and family to "Club Fred".
Fred is predeceased by his father, James Cranwell, his mother, Martha Muller Cranwell, and his brother, John Cranwell.
He is survived by his brother, Jim Cranwell of Brick NJ; sister, Martha Stucke also of Brick NJ; sister, Elizabeth Cranwell of Charlotte NC; his best buddy, Mark Meyers; dozens of beloved nieces and nephews, and scores of loyal friends. His memory will surely be a blessing.
A mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 2:00 PM on Friday, October 15, 2021 at St. Peter's Roman Catholic Church, Charlotte, North Carolina.
The family suggests that in lieu of flowers, memorial contributions be made to St. Peter's University, Jersey City, NJ in Fred's name.
Raymer-Kepner Funeral Home & Cremation Services is serving the Cranwell family. Condolences and memories may be shared online at www.kepnerfh.com.
