Mr. Elwood Harrison Wallace, 87, of Charlotte died Friday December 3, 2010 at Presbyterian Hospital. Born May 28, 1923 in Mecklenburg County he was a son of the late Columbus Harrison Wallace and Sara Ethel Lawing Wallace. Mr. Wallace began his employment with Duke Power Company in May 1942 prior to going into the US Army Medical Corp. Upon completion of his basic training at Abilene Texas he went to New York, shipped out to Liverpool England, then Swenden England, then France, then left Frances on his way to the Pacific. Day 2 on the Pacific the captain came on and said This is the Captain- this is the captain speaking- the war has ended and were returning to New York. He was discharged in 1945 at Camp Sibert, Alabama. Returning from the military he resumed his career with Duke Power, retiring after 42 years as Field Supervisor over the meter reading department. In 2008 he had been a member of the Paw Creek American Legion Post 353 for 60 years and commander of the post for one year. He became a member of Pleasant Grove United Methodist Church in 1946 and in 1948 after attending flight school at Brockenbrough Airport in Charlotte he obtained his pilot license. Funeral services will be conducted 11:00 am Monday December 6 in the Chapel of Raymer Funeral Home. Burial with military honors will follow at Pleasant Grove United Methodist Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends Sunday afternoon from 3:00 to 5:00 p.m. at the funeral home. He leaves to cherish his memory his wife, Elnita Jordan Wallace, children; Phyllis Wallace, Tommy Wallace, step-children, Everette Jordan and wife Wanda, Ernest Jordan and wife Pam, Miriam Moore and husband Jesse, grandchildren; Allison Wallace, Latta Rowell, Angie Moore, Mac Jordan, Russell Tucker, Ben Jordan, Amanda Helms, Melissa Freeman, Deanna Adams, Michael Moore, great grandchildren; Cole Jordan, Luke Helms, Jessica Phillips, Craig Adams and Austin Moore, brothers; Dennis Dale Wallace and Donald Wallace, and numerous extended family. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his step-daughter, Erma Jordan Brown and brothers, John Baxter Wallace, Barney Lee Wallace and James Russell Wallace.
