Mr. Ellsworth J. Callan of Charlotte, Mooresville and Huntersville went home to be with his Lord on Friday November 12, 2010 at the Huntersville Oaks Nursing Home surrounded by his loving family. He was born on May 28, 1922 to George and Edna Callan at New York, NY. El was a dearly loved man who devoted his life to serving his wife Gwendolyn and family both in New York and North Carolina. He was married to Gwen for 65 amazing years. He worked in New York as a high school art teacher and as proof reader for Grumman Aerospace then retired to Charlotte. He enjoyed sports, travel and his granddaughters. El loved music and art. He also enjoyed a good coffee and newspaper in the morning. He served his country well in the US Army during WW II in the Pacific Theatre of Operations. Mr. Callan was a graduate of Indiana State College of Pennsylvania. He received his Master of Arts Degree from Columbia University in New York. He taught many years at Plainedge High School, Plainedge New York. Survivors include his loving wife, Gwendolyn, son, Dale Callan and wife Sharon, daughter, Diane Callan Fitzgerald and husband Anthony and four grandchildren, Laurie Callan, Jennifer Callan, Kelly Fitzgerald and Laura Fitzgerald. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his brothers George, Harold and Gerald and sister, Audrey. The family will receive friends Sunday November 14 from 4:00 to 6:00 p.m. at Raymer Funeral Home, Huntersville, NC. Graveside services will be conducted 11:00 a.m. Monday November 15 at Mimosa Cemetery Davidson, NC. Memorials may be made to WDAC (Davidson Radio Station) P. O. Box 8990, Davidson, NC 28035. The family would like to thank the doctors, nurses and support staff with Huntersville Oaks Nursing Home and the Churchill Senior Living Home.
