Elizabeth Bond Barton

January 20, 1937 — August 26, 2024

Huntersville

Elizabeth Bond Barton, born in Jacksonville, FL in 1937 to Elizabeth Bryan Bond and John Sanford Bond and best known to her friends and family as Betty or Mema, passed away peacefully on August 26, 2024.

Betty spent her life surrounded by the people and furry animal friends she loved so much. She had a deep appreciation for beauty, be it in the natural world or in what she saw and felt in and from others in her life. Over her 87 years she enjoyed calling Jacksonville, Florida; Highlands/Cashiers, North Carolina; and Huntersville, North Carolina home and was quick to make dear friends at each stop.

Betty was known for her kind heart and cherished spending time with her family and friends, creating lasting memories that will be treasured forever. To say Betty never met a stranger would be an understatement as she would strike up a conversation with anyone at any time or place. Finally, her love for animals was boundless, and she found great joy in caring for her many pets over the years.

Betty is survived by her husband James Golden Barton, sister Meta Bond (Hugh M. III) Magevney, daughters Elizabeth Barton Smith and Caroline Barton (Thomas G.) Cobb, son John Sanford Bond Barton and grandchildren James Alexander Cobb, Michael Pattison Cobb, Lindsey Elizabeth (N. Jordan) Propst and Reid Hamilton Smith.

A private graveside service will be held at a future date in Jacksonville, FL. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (www.aspca.org) or a charity of your choice in Betty’s memory.
