Edward Richard Unitis, Sr., 92, of Huntersville, NC passed away on September 26, 2023. He was born at home on July 4, 1931, in North Chicago, IL to the late Alexander Edward Unitis and Annette Ann Unitis.  He was a first generation American citizen with both parents being born in Lithuania and meeting in the U.S.  He graduated from Waukegan East High School in 1949.

Edward had an active and on-the-go spirit. As a young man, he proudly served his country in the 82nd Airborne Division of the United States Army during the Korean War. His bravery and dedication to duty reflected his unwavering commitment to protecting those around him.

Edward then graduated from DeVry University located in Illinois.  Early in his career, he worked on the Nike Hercules surface-to-air missiles, which had nuclear warheads attached.  He enjoyed telling interesting stories about working on those missiles.  He retired after 35 years as a Program Manager in Ships Parts and Control Center (SPCC) at the Navy Supply Depot in Mechanicsburg, PA.

Upon his honorable discharge from the Army at Fort Bragg, NC, and an unexpected happenstance, Edward embarked on a new chapter of his life.  He reunited with his sweetheart, Melba Kern, who had just moved back from Baltimore, MD.  They shared a beautiful journey characterized by love and devotion over their 64 years of marriage.  After retiring, Edward and Melba shared their time between Las Vegas, NV and Boiling Springs, PA.  They would drive across the country each time, stopping off at various locations to see family, National Parks, and other famous areas along the way.  In 2005 they moved to Huntersville, NC to live close to their children Eddie (wife Chellie) and LeeAnn.

Edward impacted countless lives with kindness and compassion.  His strength, love, and will to live every moment to the fullest was inspiring to many.  He was a good, honorable man who loved his family unconditionally.  Always being supportive, proud, and genuinely happy for even the smallest accomplishments achieved by his family and friends.  He made sure to tell his family he loved them every time they parted ways or even before going to bed each night.  Whether it was socializing with friends or embarking on adventures with loved ones, he made every moment count.  One of the greatest joys in his life was spending time with his family.  He relished everyday errands or vacations alongside them, making the most of the simple pleasure of togetherness.  Watching his grandchildren participate in sports filled him with immense pride and joy, becoming his favorite pastime.  He also enjoyed tailgating at the Panthers' Football games, bowling, traveling, billiards, hiking, boating, and especially socializing.  He was well known for savoring delicious meals and sharing laughter-filled gatherings with loved ones.  He was the family videographer, having captured decades of memories that will be forever cherished.

Edward's Catholic faith played an essential role in his life. A devout believer, he always carried a rosary with him as a source of strength and comfort. Prayer was not only a personal practice for him but also a cherished moment he shared with his beloved family.

Edward Richard Unitis, Sr. leaves behind a legacy of unforgettable connections. He is reunited in eternity with his late wife Melba and daughter, LeeAnn Goggans.

Edward is survived by his children Alexander Edward Unitis II and wife Lynn of Enola, PA; Jeffrey Stevens Unitis and wife Karen of Boiling Springs, PA; Edward Richard Unitis, Jr. and wife Chellie of Huntersville, NC. His ten grandchildren Marissa, Laura, David, Michael, Jennifer, Brandon, Tony, Ashley, Carder, and Taylor; and his ten great-grandchildren Jonathan, Thomas, Christopher, Michelle, Dylan, Gage, Cameron, Alakai, Carson, and Kaelynn.
