Ed Thornton

February 23, 1952 — April 16, 2021

Marvin Edward Thornton, Jr. “Ed”, 69, passed away peacefully on April 16, 2021. He was born February 23, 1952 to the late, Marvin Edward Thornton, Sr. and Frances Perkins Thornton in Frankfort, KY and lived in “Old” Cloverdale.

Ed was a graduate of Franklin County High School and the University of Kentucky.

Along with his parents, Ed was preceded in death by aunt, Elizabeth Stucker; uncle, Manuel Thornton; and aunt, Ruby Gordon.

He is survived by his wife of 37 years, Christy Carpenter Thornton; son, William Edward Thornton (Summer) of Cramerton, NC; daughter, Megan Elizabeth Thornton (fiancé, Justin Jerman) of Cornelius, NC; grandchildren, Hope and Hannah; cousin, Brenda Swearingen of California; brother-in-law, David Carpenter (Vicki) of Mobile, AL; nephews, Patrick Carpenter (Mandy), Chris Carpenter and niece Kathryn Spilker (Michael); and other extended family.

As a teacher, Ed taught in Erie, Colorado; Boulder, Colorado; West Charlotte High School; and retired from North Mecklenburg High School in 2011. During his teaching career, he coached girls and boys basketball, softball, and baseball. He was also a coach for East Meck Youth Sports for many years. Ed was a friend to many and loved by all.

He was a lifetime fan of the University of Kentucky, the Cincinnati Reds, and long time Davidson College supporter.

A special thank you to the nurses and staff of Hospice and Palliative Care of Lake Norman and Levine & Dickson Hospice House at Aldersgate for their loving care of Ed.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Hospice and Palliative Care of Lake Norman and Levine & Dickson Hospice House at Aldersgate, 3211 Bishops Way Lane, Suite 1000, Charlotte, NC 28215.

A Celebration of the Life will be held May 8, 2021 from 2:00PM to 4:00PM at Raymer-Kepner Funeral Home located at 16901 Old Statesville Road, Huntersville, NC 28078.
