Dr. Anthony Rizzo

June 1, 1938 — November 28, 2016

Dr. Anthony Andrew Rizzo, passed away on November 28, 2016 after a long illness, surrounded by his wife and three children.

Anthony was a 1964 graduate of New York Medical College, where he was elected to Alpha Omega Alpha Medical Honor Society for outstanding academic achievement. He completed his internship in General Surgery at the University of Minnesota Hospitals in Minneapolis, MN, a residency in General Surgery at Downstate Medical Center, Brooklyn, NY and a residency in Orthopedic Surgery at New York Medical College, Flower Fifth Avenue and Metropolitan Hospitals in New York City.

From 1966 to 1968, he served in the US Army Medical Corp as Battalion Surgeon for the 2nd Missile Battalion, Yukon Command, Fairbanks, Alaska.

Anthony practiced Orthopedic and Hand Surgery in Springfield, Massachusetts for over 40 years. He was on the staff of Mercy Medical Center, Baystate Medical Center and Noble Hospital in Westfield, MA. He performed some of the first joint replacements in the area.

He had an insatiable thirst for knowledge, and medicine was a profession he truly loved. As he said many times, "I would have done it all for free." As a world traveler, he shared his skills and interest in other cultures with people around the globe. He was an avid fisherman, hunter and woodcarver. He spent as much time pursuing these avocations as his busy Orthopedic practice would allow.

Anthony is survived by his family, who loved him dearly. His wife of 51 years, Patricia, three children: Frank Rizzo, James Rizzo and Kathryn Nash, and six grand children: Anthony James (AJ) Rizzo, Nicholas Rizzo, Betsy Rizzo, Megan Rizzo, Alexander Nash and Sarah Kate Nash. Funeral arrangements are private.

Memorial contributions may be made to the charity of choice.
